VÉ SỐ – SEAthrough Issue #01 | Southeast Asia Artbook
An artbook about Southeast Asia, position, relation, and the unstable idea of identity, bringing together contemporary artworks by 21 artists from different backgrounds and locations.
VÉ SỐ is the first issue of SEAthrough™, an independent artbook series by Hand-Fetish-Projects®.
The publication brings together contemporary artworks across different practices and visual languages. There is no prescribed style, subject, or degree of “Southeast Asian-ness” required of the artists. What matters is what happens when different references and positions are made to share the same pages.
The artists gathered here do not form a neat regional category. Some are connected to Southeast Asia; some are not. Some make work that touches the region directly; others have no apparent reason to be in an artbook about Southeast Asia until the curator puts them there. The relationship is made through the book itself.
The visual identity of VÉ SỐ takes its cues from the colours and recognisable visual signals of lottery tickets, giving the issue a distinct point of recognition throughout the publication. The physical edition is produced with high-quality art paper and a lay-flat format, allowing the artwork to open wide across the spread and giving the book the feel of a considered art object.
